Although the Little Finger and Parmex Carrots in this dish are "incredibly cute", according to chef Mandy Stuart, the real star of this dish is fennel. A vegetable and herb frequently used in Italian cooking, fennel boasts a flavor that is a little lighter than licorice. This week, Wayward Seed Farm dropped off some fennel that made Woody (our Produce Guy) do a little jig. Uses for fennel are diverse. Nonetheless, many people get "writer's block" in the kitchen when presented with this delicate vegetable that becomes fresh and sweet when cooked.
Look below for three uses for fennel, as well as information on the wines we're serving tonight for our weekly A Very Ohio Summer gathering on The Veranda.
If fennel's not your thing, stop by anyway. Jeni's Splendid Ice Cream will be handing out free samples of their seasonal flavors on The Veranda from 6.30 to 8.30 p.m.

Meet Our People
It's
the people at The Hills Market that make us like no other market. This
feature of our e-mail will help introduce you to some of our key
associates, from the Professional Foodies making and serving your foods
in the back of the store to the excellent team of Customer Specialists
in the front of the store working hard to bring in special items and to
make sure you are out the door when you're ready to leave.
Meet Brandon Seitz.
Brandon has worked in every department of the store (except for the
Floral Shoppe and Produce) since he started here in September of 2001.
Having spent personal time learning about wine, as well as earning a dual
degree of Food Business Management and Marketing at The Ohio State
University, Brandon's interest in the world of food and wine have truly
been an asset to our team. These days, Brandon assists customers in our
newest department: our State Liquor Agency.

Beets, Broccoli and Dill. These are the first flavors of July, from our friends at Wayward Seed Farm. Although beets are special simply roasted, Mandy's found a few more ways to use them, with a little help from Bon Appetit.
Our Ohio vendor for the evening is Blue Jacket Dairy. Stop by tonight, try samples and have a glass of wine on The Veranda. (Or Canadian beer!)

It's time for beets, arguably the world's most misunderstood vegetable. We're going to risk letting out the secret: beets are delicious. Our friends and Wayward Seed Farm know that, and as a result, we found a lovely bunch in this week's share. Two of our three recipes this week feature beets; we hope you'll try them. Chances are, you'll fall in love.

"Eat your leafy greens," our doctors, media, books and parents tell us. There was no shortage of leafy greens in this week's share from Wayward Seed Farm. We got lots of Swiss Chard, Napa Cabbage, Bronze Arrow Lettuce (an heirloom lettuce that won lots of awards in the 1950's) and Crispino Iceburg in our share. As a result, we're "going green" with this week's recipes. Mandy made sure that not only are these recipes good for you, but they're tasty, too.

We think that food tastes better outside, specifically during the warm weather months. This summer, rain or shine, you can grab lunch from The Grill on The Veranda, Tuesdays through Fridays from 11.30 a.m. to 1.30 p.m. If you're not feeling up for something from The Grill, you're always welcome to bring anything from inside the store - from our Salad Bar to our Bakery - outside.

Tot Soi, Pac Choi and Flashy Troutback, oh my! This week's share from Wayward Seed Farm includes several unique greens that we've never encountered before. (While not every share is the same, we're sure that you'll get something as equally interesting and delicious.) Mandy did her research and tried came up with these fantastic recipes.
